Working as an interim manager

One choice for someone leaving the public sector is to work as an interim manager.
Interim management allows an organization to hire a manager with particular expertise on a short term contract for a limited amount of time; for example, to provide temporary cover for a role or to achieve specific objectives.
Interim management is different to consultancy; you will do the job, not give advice on how the job should be done.
Working as an interim gives you great flexibility, strengthens you CV and provides an opportunity to strengthen your network.  Some people work as interim managers between longer-term permanent roles but others make a choice to spend their careers as interims.
People hiring interim managers expect them to be up and running quickly!  But interims tend to be very experienced and well qualified for the roles they take on, so they can usually be productive and make a noticeable impact from the outset.
Unencumbered by company politics or culture, interim managers provide a fresh perspective and are able to concentrate on what’s best for the organization. They are managers in their own right who will take responsibility for managing their role or project and be accountable for its success or failure.
Interim assignments can vary widely in scope and requirements and can include change management roles, ‘gap’ assignments, project management and turnaround management.
To work as an interim manager, you should have worked at senior level as a manager, functional specialist or project manager/programme director.
Each new assignment and client is a learning opportunity.
The cumulative experience and knowledge gained over different assignments enriches your skill-set and makes you even more worth your day rate.
But you do not enjoy employment benefits - you are responsible for your own holiday pay, sick pay, pension, health insurance etc.  It can be an exciting way to enhance your career but you need to be able to live with the reality that a steady flow of assignments is not guaranteed.
